Inverclyde Chamber of Commerce has responded to the recent announcement from Ferguson Marine regarding adjustments to its workforce as the business prepares for the next phase of its shipbuilding programme.
Ferguson Marine has announced the commencement of a voluntary redundancy programme, with formal consultations expected to see up to 70 employees depart through a voluntary process. The announcement comes as the shipyard moves towards the final stages of work on MV Glen Rosa, ahead of its planned Q4 2026 delivery.
The company has stated that the workforce changes are intended to ensure the business remains competitive and financially sustainable during the transition between its current order book and potential future vessel-building contracts.
In March 2026, the Scottish Government announced its intention to provide a strategic direct award to Ferguson Marine for four new vessels. Due diligence on the proposed award is currently underway, with the company stating that the workforce changes are designed to ensure the yard is appropriately structured and ready to commence work once contracts are finalised.

“It is obviously disappointing news but as a business and to safeguard future jobs, this action was necessary to make sure it is ready to access the opportunities which hopefully will be announced quickly by the Scottish Government relating to the potential new contracts on completion of appropriate due diligence.”
