Free and low-cost screenings showcase Horror, Heritage, and Homegrown Talent selected by local curators and young people

RIG Arts takes over the Waterfront Cinema, 24th - 30th October, as part of Galoshans Festival 2025.

With 12 carefully curated films spanning cult classics, Scottish independent cinema, award-winning documentaries, and locally-made shorts, the festival offers something for everyone – at prices designed to welcome the whole community through the doors.

What makes this festival truly special is who chose the films. A panel of local curators have selected every screening, with young programmers trained through RIG Arts workshops having chosen one third of the films, look out for ‘Youth Curated’ stickers throughout the programme!

"We wanted to trust our community to programme cinema that reflects who we are while taking audiences on a journey," says Karlyn Barr from RIG Arts.

"These aren't films you'd normally see on the big screen in Greenock, but they're films our community is excited to share with each other."

The weekend programme celebrates three themes which reflect Galoshans Festival’s ethos:

Horror, Heritage, and Homegrown Talent. Audiences can experience everything from Ken Loach's powerful Sweet Sixteen to Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave, cult horror classic The Lost Boys, and stunning animation Ghost in the Shell.

Local voices take center stage throughout, RIG Arts Film School graduates launch the festival with Ewan Dougan’s Bad Batch, and Mark Grahams’ Lost But Not Found. A range of Scottish horror shorts will be shown, alongside feature-length documentaries Punching Above Our Weight and Sitting Tight: The Story of the Lee Jeans Sit-In – both telling powerful Scottish stories of community and resilience.

The programme also includes Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland's Girl Bands, and From Scotland with Love, a love letter to Scottish life drawn from archive footage. A brand-new documentary about Galoshans Festival itself will premiere on Sunday evening.

Standard tickets cost just £4 ( less than half the usual cinema price!) with £2 concessions for young people, students, seniors, disabled audiences, and those on low incomes. Greenock Waterfront Cinema is fully accessible, and easily reached by public transport. The festival is part of the wider Galoshans Festival, Inverclyde's fortnight-long celebration of creativity rooted in the area's unique cultural identity and Halloween traditions. The film programme has been made possible through funding from Film Hub Scotland, Screen Scotland, and National Lottery funding from the BFI.
