Nursery overprovision plan agreed

Councillors have agreed in principle to consult on closing the nursery class at King’s Oak Primary in Greenock’s east end due to an oversupply of early years places. A council review found current and future demand can be met by three nearby centres—Blairmore, Hillend and Glenbrae—with Blairmore operating at about half capacity.

King’s Oak Primary itself would not be affected, and no staff would lose their jobs; any affected nursery staff would be redeployed elsewhere in the council. An informal consultation with parents, staff and stakeholders will take place before any final decision, followed by a formal statutory consultation if the proposal progresses.

The committee also approved separate plans to explore creating new additional support needs classes at King’s Oak and St Andrew’s Primary. Any changes to the nursery provision would not take effect before August 2027.
