Drivers are being advised that new 20mph speed limit zones are coming into effect in four Inverclyde towns and villages this week.

From Monday 26 June 2023, the lower speed limits will be introduced in the Cathcart Street area of Greenock and in Port Glasgow, Gourock and Kilmacolm town and villages centres.

Failure to comply could result in enforcement action by the police. The current 30mph speed limit in these areas is being lowered to 20mph to help improve safety in town and village centres.

Councillor Michael McCormick, Inverclyde Council’s convener of environment and regeneration, said: “It’s important we do all we can to improve safety in our town and village centres for pedestrians and motorists and this is a welcome move.

“Reducing speed by even a small amount can really be the difference between life and death and can also minimise the risk of pedestrians and drivers being seriously injured or hurt.

“There are already several 20mph zones across Inverclyde, particularly in and around our schools, and these new lower speed limit areas in town and village centres will further strengthen the road safety message and encourage drivers to slow down and beware of their surroundings.”

The new 20mph zones were approved following studies of key locations around Inverclyde and were approved by a council committee this year after a public consultation period.

There are currently several mandatory 20mph speed limits or zones already in place at Branchton; St Patrick’s Primary; Notre Dame High; Lady Alice Primary; Inverclyde Academy, all Greenock; Port Glasgow Community Campus; and Broadfield Avenue in Port Glasgow.

There are other ‘Twenty’s Plenty’ advisory zones.
