Overview:

Lorraine became concerned when a family member receiving home care expressed distress just before caregivers arrived. The family member was upset because they didn’t know who would be coming to assist with their personal care and were uncomfortable being seen undressed by strangers. Lorraine came up with the idea of a dignity cover that would help maintain privacy and comfort during personal care routines, allowing individuals to be undressed, washed, and dressed without exposing themselves. This solution would also help protect their mental well-being, alleviating the fear and anxiety before caregivers arrived.

Maureen Callan, who supported Lorraine’s idea, encouraged her to pursue a patent. Together, Lorraine and Maureen designed and created a prototype, which led them to apply for a patent (patent pending). They named the product "The Care Cape" and began manufacturing it themselves after struggling to find a suitable British manufacturer. They are still in the process of finding a reliable manufacturer and hope that one day, the Care Cape will be used by individuals receiving care, both at home and in other settings, to maintain dignity and improve the care experience.
