Some of you may already know that Campbell and Mhairi are the third generation of Mackellars to run the opticians in Greenock. Since 1936, it has been growing its team and investing in new technology to serve the people of Greenock.
This past year has been difficult for everyone in our local community and Reid Mackellar is grateful that our family business is still operating now in 2021. As an essential service, the business has worked hard to ensure all safety protocols have been adhered to and they look forward to welcoming customers back through their doors.
Reid Mackellar Opticians was first set up in 1936 by James Reid Mackellar – lovingly known as Mr Mac. Then in 1952, he expanded the store by purchasing two shops next door. It wasn’t until 1971 that Jimmy Mackellar, Mr Mac’s son, graduated and joined his father at the store.
Fast forward to 1997 and Jimmy’s daughter Mhairi becomes the 3rd generation Mackellar to qualify in optics. In 1999, Campbell joined his family at the practice, after a few years of working at practices throughout Scotland.
Over the next few years, the business continued to grow through refurbishments, new team members and even an award for Jimmy Mackellar.
Reid Mackellar is delighted to be celebrating 85 years and with this anniversary, is looking toward the future. The business is always working to improve its store, by picking out new styles, hiring expert optometrists and ensuring its staff offer the best possible customer care.
The business recently invested £90,000 in three new OCT machines to improve the quality of the service offered by the team. An OCT machine performs a quick and very detailed non-contact eye scan, using light waves to take a cross-section of the back of the eye. Your optometrist can then evaluate the scan and go over it with you. Reid Mackellar is currently offering an OCT for £20 when part of your routine appointment!
