Inverclyde Council will mark one year since the start of the war in Ukraine by lighting up the iconic Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow statue with the colours of the country’s flag as a sign of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

The lighting will take place this evening, Friday 24 February 2023, on the first anniversary of the conflict.

The Ukrainian flag is also flying above the council’s headquarters at the Municipal Buildings in Greenock.

People across the UK will fall silent at 11:00 to mark the anniversary of the war.

Provost Drew McKenzie said: “We wanted to show our support for Ukraine and its people in their struggle against aggression from Russia.

“We stand with them in solidarity and we hope that this and the many worldwide gestures of support will bring comfort to those affected by the conflict.”

The shipbuilder’s statue, located in Port Glasgow’s Coronation Park, is a symbol of the town’s proud shipbuilding heritage and has been a source of inspiration for many in the community.

By lighting it up in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, the council hopes to send a powerful message of support and encouragement to the people of Ukraine.

Provost McKenzie added: “The statue is an iconic landmark in Port Glasgow and it is fitting that it should be used to show our support for the people of Ukraine.

“We hope that this will continue to shine a light and encourage others to show their support in their own way.”

The lighting is a reminder of the importance of showing solidarity in times of crisis, and of Inverclyde’s commitment to supporting communities both at home and abroad.
