Tributes have been paid to Greenock Morton legend and former councillor Allan McGraw at a special meeting of Inverclyde Council today, Thursday 2 March 2023.
Provost Drew McKenzie offered his condolences to the family of the former Cappielow player and manager affectionately known as ‘Mr. Morton’ on behalf of the council and people of Inverclyde.
It was announced on Wednesday 1 March 2023 that Mr. McGraw, who also served as a local councillor, had died aged 83.
Provost McKenzie said: “The sudden passing this week of Morton legend Allan McGraw must be acknowledged.
“Allan McGraw served Morton as a player, a manager and ultimately as an ambassador for the club.
“It is clear to see the esteem that he was held in throughout the football world by the sheer amount of tributes that have been paid to him these last few days.
“I think it is true to say that his ability to kick a ball was only surpassed by Mr McGraw being a thoroughly decent human being who found time to speak to everyone that said hello to him.
“He shall be sadly missed and our thoughts go to his sons, Allan and Mark and to his wider family.”
On Thursday, the saltire flag was raised at half-mast above the council’s Greenock Municipal Buildings headquarters in tribute to Mr. McGraw.
It will be flown over the weekend through Monday.
