Celebrating Multi-Cultural Communities

A GREENOCK nursery hosted an event to celebrate the different cultures of its children and families.

Staff from Wellpark Children’s Centre organised a showcase of song, dance, stories, and food at neighbouring Broomhill Hub.

It was an opportunity for children to learn about different cultures, as well as their own.

The event was the culmination of a week-long cultural celebration project at the nursery.

Throughout the week and at the celebration finale, the young people learned about cultures including African, Afghan, and Scottish.

The entertainment included dancers from St Patrick's Primary, a piper, and an African storyteller.

Ann-Marie Cunningham, head of Wellpark Children’s Centre, said: “This year the children have been learning about different countries, cultures and traditions and this was an opportunity for our children to experience different cultures, including their own.

“It is very important that our children experience and learn about the world around them and it has been so lovely to involve our parents and whole nursery community in our learning.

“The children have tasted different foods, explored traditional dress from countries around the world and have celebrated our similarities and differences.

“It was a celebration of all the different cultures that make up the nursery.”

The children have learned about acceptance and kindness all year and this week they have explored dance, stories and food from around the world as a celebration of their hard work.

This kind of learning helps them to understand the importance of learning about the world around them.

Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council’s education and communities convener, said: “I had a wonderful time at the event and it was a great opportunity for me and others to meet so many of our families from different backgrounds.

“Inverclyde a multi-cultural place with a proud track record of being a welcoming and inclusive community for everyone and that was evident at the celebration day at Broomhill Hub.

“A huge amount of credit to the staff, children and families from Wellpark Children’s Centre for putting on a fantastic event.”

Other activities on the day included Gele head wraps and tasting foods from around the world.

Families of children who attend Wellpark were also invited along.
