The achievements of Greenock Wanderers have been acknowledged by councillors to commemorate the rugby club’s 150^th anniversary.

Greenock Wanderers Rugby Football Club was founded in 1873 and is celebrating the milestone this year.

Councillor John Crowther asked that Inverclyde Council formally recognise the anniversary of the local club at the most recent full council meeting.

A civic reception for Greenock Wanderers Rugby Football Club has already been granted to mark the achievement and is due to take place next year.

At the meeting, councillors were asked to acknowledge the “sterling work” of the club’s management committee and players in the community.

Cllr Crowther said: “I am delighted that my fellow councillors supported my request to acknowledge the achievements of Greenock Wanderers Rugby Football Club.

“It may have Greenock in its title but the Wanderers have been a great ambassador for the whole of Inverclyde for 150 years and counting.

“I’m delighted that the club has also evolved over the years and now has a successful women and girls section too.

“Such is the good work of the club that it has been supported over the years through the council’s Community Fund and the Active Schools/Sports Development service and I look forward to the planned civic reception next year.

“It is an asset to the community and I would like to wish them much success in future years.”

Councillors unanimously agreed on the request.

Council notes that Greenock Wanderers Rugby Football Club (GWRFC), founded in 1873, celebrate their 150th anniversary this year, commends officers for engaging with GWRFC in recognition of this magnificent milestone in the club’s history and notes further that a civic reception for GWRFC will take place next year to mark this historical achievement.

 GWRFC is an asset to the community, and Council acknowledges the sterling work of the GWRFC management committee plus players whose engagement with the community within Inverclyde and beyond is recognised herewith and Council wishes GWRFC continued success in future years.
