Swimmers in Port Glasgow received an early Christmas present with the reopening of the town’s pool after emergency repairs.

Customers were welcomed back on Tuesday afternoon after the completion of work by building owners Inverclyde Council.

The facility, managed by Inverclyde Leisure, also houses an Express fitness gym and health suite, including a steam room and sauna.

The town centre building was closed at the end of October after corrosion was found in parts of the balcony and walkway during a maintenance inspection.

While the Express gym reopened a short time later following safety checks, the rest of the facility remained closed.

Following almost £70,000 worth of repairs by the council, the swimming pool, showers and health suite have now reopened.

Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council’s convener of education and communities, said: “It’s great that we’ve been able to conclude the repair works before Christmas to give customers who use Port Glasgow Swimming Pool an early present.

“I’m sure with the festive holidays coming up people will make good use of the pool as well as the Express fitness gym and health suite.”

Stuart Boyle, Operations Manager at Inverclyde Leisure, said: “It’s fantastic that the remedial works have been completed so quickly and the building has been given the green light to re-open.

“Inverclyde Leisure would like to thank Inverclyde Council for their support. The team at Port Glasgow are delighted to be back open and are very excited to welcome customers back.”

Port Glasgow swimming lessons will remain at the Waterfront Leisure Complex on 20, 21, and 22 December. Lessons then stop for the Christmas and New Year break. Swimming lessons will then resume at Port Glasgow on Sunday 8 January 2023.

From Tuesday 20 December, members of the Port Glasgow Active Swim Membership will automatically be changed back to Port Glasgow and access to the Waterfront will cease. Anyone who is interested in continuing to use both pools can contact the team at Port Glasgow who can assist.

The Express Fitness gym continues to be open as normal. From Tuesday 20th, members will be able to access shower, pool, and health suite facilities.
