SSE and TotalEnergies have partnered to create a joint venture named Source, focused on establishing electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the UK and Ireland.
This new venture aims to install up to 3,000 high-power charging stations in these regions, targeting both EV and fleet owners. Over the next five years, Source plans to set up 150 kW charging points in 300 locations, aiming for a 20% market share in key urban areas. These stations will be powered by renewable energy from SSE and TotalEnergies.
Several charging hubs are already under construction, with more in the planning stages. Neil Kirkby, SSE's managing director of enterprise, emphasized that this initiative will support the transition to a decarbonized transport system, enabling more sustainable and efficient vehicle operation.
Mathieu Soulas, senior vice president for new mobilities at TotalEnergies, highlighted the opportunity to expand their network in Europe and become a leading provider of high-power charging. He emphasized the goal of offering a reliable, nationwide ultra-fast charging service for both passenger cars and fleets.
Lilian Greenwood, Minister for the Future of Roads, praised Source as a significant initiative with the potential to accelerate the UK's shift to electric vehicles. She noted the importance of industry collaboration in promoting greener travel and enhancing consumer confidence in widespread, reliable EV charging to increase the adoption of electric vehicles.
