International Workers’ Memorial Day 2022

A service will take place this week to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day.

It will be held in Clyde Square, Greenock, on Thursday 28 April 2022 at noon led by Reverend Alan Sorensen of Wellpark Mid Kirk.

Wreaths will also be laid at the ‘Men of the Clyde’ sculpture at the square on behalf of Inverclyde Council, trade unions and clergy.

A lone piper will then play a lament followed by a minute’s silence.

Greenock’s Beacon Arts Centre will also be lit up purple on the day as a mark of respect.

International Workers’ Memorial Day is takes place on 28 April each year to remember people who were killed at work, as well as those who have suffered injury, illness or disease through their employment.

This year’s theme is ‘health and safety is a fundamental workers’ right’.

The service is open to members of the public and employers are encouraged to support staff to attend if they wish or to take a moment during the day to mark the occasion.
