SCC Evidence To The Economy & Fair Work Committee

On the 1st of September, Scottish Chambers of Commerce Deputy Chief Executive, Charandeep Singh BEM, gave evidence to the Economy & Fair Work Committee at the Scottish Parliament.

The theme of the evidence session was on recovery for businesses across Scotland, participants were encouraged to put forward policies to promote economic recovery; what the new Scottish Government economic strategy should include and to inform the Committee’s input to the Scottish Government’s budget for 2022-23.

Charandeep Singh shared the following SCC Network priorities for economic recovery:

  • A furlough scheme, which can be accessed and deployed rapidly, should be made available as we go into the autumn and winter months where the risk of restrictions returning is significantly higher.
  • Government must focus on the safe, quicker reopening and recovery of the aviation and travel sectors to restore Scotland’s vital international connectivity.
  • We must see significant investment placed in the supply chain infrastructure, in light of current shortage and pricing issues, as well as to help realise Scotland’s exporting potential.
  • Businesses who wish to expand and export internationally must be supported to access the right market to share their products and services, as growth in this area can underpin economic recovery.
